Beware of Newsgator 2.5

Newsgator logo

Newsgator has come up with an update to their Outlook RSS client. As I usually do, as soon as I got the notice, I went to the site and downloaded it. Unfortunately, the service is tightly integrated with their online services, and I have an outdated package (it is the one they gave me as a reviewer). Although it doesn’t expire until September 2006, apparently it isn’t valid with this new version, and so it refused to work. I uninstalled it an reinstalled version 2 again, and it worked fine, but then I lost all my feeds. Luckily the folder names helped me find all the feeds I had, but it was time-consuming. Be sure to read all the information first before you upgrade. Hopefully you won’t face the same problems.

As a side note, it’d probably be a good idea to backup your feed listing to an OPML file every so often.

  • I receive Greg Reinacker’s Weblog as part of my feeds. He posted some more information on what is needed to upgrade.

That information can be found at http://www.rassoc.com/gregr/weblog/archive.aspx?post=766

Sorry Graham, I guess you are just too quick on the upgrade path.

  • I’ve seen that information, but it still didn’t help. I even managed to change packages to something current, but it still doesn’t work. I have a business plan (Platinum) and there should be a spot to enter the registration key, but it just isn’t there. I’ll leave it for a few days and keep monitoring their support forums.

  • Graham – turns out that accounts that were comped for press and others don’t have the same upgrade capability as “regular” accounts. This is a bug – the dev team is working on it right now. If I had to guess, I’d say it will probably be fixed tomorrow sometime. Sorry for the hassle!

  • Well, I logged in again this evening and there was a place to enter my registration key. I put my key in and a message came up and said that my account had been upgraded. I will try installing the software again later this evening or tomorrow morning (of course I’ll export an OPML first).

  • Good news! Everything installed fine. The software doesn’t really seem to be any different at all. It does synchronize very well with the online manager. This has actually gotten me to go to their web site more often. Other than that, I’m a little underwhelmed. Since it is a free upgrade for everyone, then I’d probably say to go for it.
