Google beats Microsoft, Coke in brand stakes

From USA Today:

Google has knocked Microsoft off the top spot and been named the most powerful global brand of 2007 in a recently published brand ranking.

It’s the second year in a row a tech brand has beaten household names such as Coca-Cola, Marlboro and Toyota.

In the ranking, which factored in financial performance and consumer sentiment, Google ranked first with a brand value of more than $66 billion, nearly double its value in the 2006 ranking, according to market researcher Millward Brown Optimor.

  • Google is always the first and best…

  • How can a brand be powerful? It can be worth a lot, but powerful?

A company can be powerful however.
Imagine Microsoft would (but they never will), at a certain moment in time, have all Windows machines around the world stop. That would cause major global problems.

What can Google do? Stop their search engine from working? Wow.

I can see why their brand name is worth a lot, because everyone knows Google, but powerful? I simply disagree.

  • Things have changed in the last 4 years.

Google has made online webapps. If they would stop delivering these services, it would in fact cause damage.

Google is thereby getting more powerful. I don’t know if I like this development though, to become dependant on a third party that way. I still prefer to have my vital apps running on my own computer. Just image what would happen if Google were hacked and out of order for 2 days…
