Even if the layabout only watches television, an interesting portrait could be shot with the person sitting watching several televisions all at once. I have posted two self portraits of myself using a computer ( http://potd.chrisempey.com/archives/2006/02/23_night_light.html and http://potd.chrisempey.com/archives/2006/02/22_at_the_compu.html) which would make a nice idea for someone who seemingly does nothing because they are on the computer all day. And if you really feel that the person has no environment to shoot in a favourable way, there is still the option of a standard studio portrait. Everyone has something that they do.
