If you go to Start -- Find there is an option there to find Files
or Folders... I'm sure that many of you have never even used it,
but it is a powerful feature built into Windows that lets you
search your hard drives for files that are named a certain way
or contain certain text. Of course, as with all things Microsoft,
it just doesn't go far enough. You can do a search for files that
contain certain text, but it still doesn't tell you where the
text was found in the document. If you have a very large document,
just knowing that it contains certain text isn't enough. Super
Text Search, by Glenn Alcott, attempts to help you with this.

The best way to tell you about the program is to show you a search
I did and that is what the screen shot above shows. I chose a
specific folder to look in (bottom left corner) and I search for
the text PCIN. I included all files and subdirectories, but wanted
to match the case of the text and PCIN had to be a word on its
own. In the display above it lists the files that the desired
text was found in, how many times it was found in that file, and
the attributes of the file. When you choose a file, it shows you
where in the file it was found. In my case, 02logo.txt is a file
that I use in Server-Side Includes and PCIN was found in the ALT
attribute of my header image. Now that I know where to find it,
it would be very easy to open up that file and edit it.
Super Text Search allows you to save searches and rerun them
again later. There is also a Preferences menu item that you can
set some search and display settings. And of course you can print
out the results of your search to look at later or to look at
when you are actually editing the files.
Out of all of the utilities that I reviewed by Glenn Alcott,
this was probably the best one. It is simple to use but gives
you powerful results. I would certainly recommend it to anyone
and the $24 price is affordable for anyone. You can learn more
