Although I probably organize my hard drive more than anyone
else I know, I still end up with several copies of files in
different spots on my hard drive. I usually use PowerDesk
98 in 2-pane view to compare the contents of directories,
but it is a large program and includes all sorts of features
I don't need when comparing directories. I now can use a simpler,
yet just as powerful tool.
Directory Compare, by Glenn Alcott, is strictly for comparing
directories (hence the title). As you can see by the screen
shot, it conveniently shows the files in a 2-pane layout.
In this example here, the c:\OldRoot folder
was one I created so I could copy all of the junk from c:\
and keep my hard drive clean. Somehow some of those files
reappeared and you can see that the config.ago and config.sys
files are in both places. Directory Compare highlights the
attributes of the files (size, date, time, etc.) for easy
comparison.
As you can see, there are also several other
features that may come in handy for you. There really isn't
much purpose in just comparing directories. You would most
likely want to delete duplicates or move files. You can do
this right from within the Directory Compare interface. Of
course you could always do this yourself in Windows Explorer,
but then you would have to find the files again. In this environment,
you already have everything set out for you.
Another handy feature is the filter option.
I know that some of my image folders can have hundreds of
files in them, of many different file types. If I want to
just look at bitmaps (BMP) then I could enter that into the
filter area.
You may not think that you would have a use for
Directory Compare, but I'm sure once you use it, you will be amazed
at the help it gives you with file management. Directory Compare
costs $24. You can learn more about Directory Compare or download
a trial at http://www.galcott.com/.
