The free Microsoft Office Standard alternative, Software602's 602Pro PC Suite 2001, is becoming ever more popular. It is a reliable program that performs many of the same functions that the MS suite can, and of course the price can't be beat.

There are, however, many things that it can't do. Software602 has released a product called 602Pro PC Suite Plus 2001 for $29.95 that adds many useful features. The basic suite is adequate, and the Plus suite adds much more for only 1/10 the cost of Microsoft Office.

Some of the added features of the Plus suite are:

  • Thesaurus (there is spell-checking in the free version, but no thesaurus)

Right-click on a word and the Thesaurus appears.

  • Mail Merge capabilities (with your Outlook Express address book, or with other database formats) to print, email or fax.

  • More file export formats (RTF, XML)

The addition of more file formats is helpful. Rich Text Files (RTF) are even more universal than Word documents, and they don't have the macro security problem that Word documents have.

  • Bar Code support

  • Text-to-Speech (your document can be read to you)

Many of the add-ins are available from the Tools menu.

Although not essential, the features added with the Plus add-on make 602Pro PC Suite a more complete office suite. If using the suite at home, you may not need these features. But if you are using this at work, you will almost certainly use the other tools. The $29.95 price tag is a bargain. If your company decides to standardize on the product, there are also site licenses available.
