My 2 Cents on Web Promotion
I set up a web site for PC Improvements on my ISP free page
back in March. It was more or less a chance for me to play
around before I got my own domain with a hosting provider.
That all came into effect on June 1, 1998. That was when I
started to promote my site. It started slowly. I didn't really
understand meta tags, so I just built a page that looked good
to me, and then submitted it to the different search engines.
I started to get just a few people find me during any particular
week, and in June, I averaged 0.4 people finding me from search
engines. Each week and month, I added more pages (the more
pages you have the better chance you have of being found),
I exchanged links with other sites (excellent source of visitors),
and I improved the layout of my pages so they would show up
better in the Search Engines. Another way that I increased
my traffic came from building more web pages for clients.
As I put a link to my site at the bottom of each of their
pages, I would get visitors from there.
Probably the best thing that I was able to do was to get
my site listed on a few of the bigger and more well known
computer sites. It was all topped of by being listed as a
resource on the PC
Guide site. That has increased my traffic 2 fold. This
in turn has almost doubled the number of subscribers to The
PC Improvement News.
I now get about 60 unique visitors a day, with several hundred
hits a day, and about 12 people finding me from search engines.
There has been a steady improvement, and I believe these numbers
will continue to rise as I keep learning and adding. The one
thing that I was never going to sacrifice was content. There
was no way that a high search engine placement would take
away from my site content and the look of it. I really feel
that is an important point.
The one thing that I am still struggling with is getting
listed on Yahoo. Taking the above point into consideration,
I am not willing to make any major changes to my site, but
I would still like to get listed with them. If anyone would
like to volunteer any suggestions, I would appreciate it.
Below is a table with some stats for my sites (search engine
results only). The steady improvement is clear.
