Permanently Delete Files

I have recently had someone who came across the PC Improvements web site searching for information on how to permanently delete files. He found the article about undeleting files, but nothing about deleting files, so he took advantage of the free help.

This was his e-mail.

Dear Sir/Madam:
I found your web site on the Internet and decided to take you up on your offer of assistance. My research has lead me to several programs that will help undelete files, but I have yet to discover one that deletes files permanently. There seems to be a way to retrieve those files that are even intentionally deleted. Well, I don't want that. I need a program that sends deleted files into a state so unretrievable that not even Scottie or Jordie LaForge could find them. Who sells such a product? Do you know?
Thank you,
Derrick L. James

Here is my reply...

Hi Derrick,
I know of two programs that say they will permanently delete your files. I have never had the need to use any of these programs so I haven't used them, but I've heard good things about them.

They are:
Burn It! by Syncronys

Nuts & Bolts by McAfee
www.networkassociates.com
http://www.networkassociates.com/products/retail/diagnostic/nuts.asp
(if you look at the comparison chart at the bottom they list something called Secure Erase Feature)

Both of these programs should do the trick. They work by locating the space that you want to delete and then the write over and erase that same sector several times over so that there is no trace of the data left.

Both of the products are relatively inexpensive. I've seen Burn It! packaged in a box set for $27.99 Cdn. and Nuts and Bolts for $49.99 Cdn.
