CONTENTS
Opening Thoughts
Not much new happening around here. The summer is winding down, but Andrew
doesn't seem to ever wind down :-)
Chris and I have a couple of products that we are in the process of reviewing,
and hope to have something done in a few weeks. We will also soon start working
on some of our testing so will be contacting those who said they would help.

The NEWS
China eyes search engine supremacy
"Chinese software company has announced a campaign to beat U.S.-based
search engine giant Google.
Huicong International Software's search tool, which covers 200-million Chinese-language
Web pages, has incorporated topic categorization, content analysis and China-region
recognition into its engine, according to the company.
A unique feature is the ability of the tool to suggest corrections to incorrectly
spelled pinyin, a method of using the Western alphabet for Chinese script.

Saddam's hometown gets first postwar Net cafe
"The first words Ahmed Abdullah typed in the Google search engine were
'George Bush.'
The 19-year-old wanted to access the president's Web site, something he couldn't
do under restricted and tightly controlled Internet service during Saddam
Hussein's rule.
On Saturday, Saddam's hometown of Tikrit got its first postwar Internet cafe,
where residents could browse any site without fear of being monitored or
blocked."

Symantec adds product activation
"Security software and service company Symantec has added a controversial
type of antipiracy technology to the new version of its main virus-zapping
program.
Norton Antivirus 2004, which Symantec announced Monday for release next month,
will use product activation, an increasingly common technique to tie a copy
of an application to a particular PC.
Symantec plans to add activation to the rest of its consumer software line
over the next year."

President Bush Not Interested in Gadgets
"No pager or PDA hangs off his belt and there's no cell phone in his
suit pocket.
President Bush, like many world leaders and business titans, relies on aides
to carry the high-tech gizmos that are a staple of modern life. That's just
fine by Bush, described as intrigued by what technology can do but not necessarily
with the gadgets themselves."

Question
I bought the logitech keyboard/mouse combination ( Cordless Elite Duo )
which is a nice wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse. Recently I have noticed
that when I have number-lock on, everything works except for the 9. So I
will be typing along and entering some long number, only to notice that none
of the 9's showed up. I have tried switching wireless channels from 1 to
2 and 2 to 1. Another thing that makes this an interesting problem is that
when the numberlock is off, the page-up feature still works. So it can't
be the key can it? This has confused me and I have no idea where to ask about
this.

THE TIPS and OTHER
STUFF
The Illustrated Catalog Of ACME Products
"ACME is a worldwide leader of many manufactured goods. From its humble
beginnings providing corks and flypaper to bug collectors ("Buddy's
Bug Hunt/1935") to its heyday in the American Southwest supplying a
certain coyote, from Ultimatum Dispatchers to Batman outfits, ACME has set
the standard for excellence."
If you were a fan of Wile E Coyote and the gadgets he would order from ACME,
then check out this site. The thumbnails on the main page were not showing
up when I visited, but the link to each item works. Those pages then have
a picture of the item with a description. Check it out at http://home.nc.rr.com/tuco/looney/acme.html
