OPENING THOUGHTS
I still have troubles with my current hosting provider. I thought I had a new
one all lined up, but there are some delays in their mailing list software which
I don't like. Thank you all for your patience during this. If you've been trying

A few of you have asked how Lisa is doing. She is doing just great. The baby
is due July 19, but the doctor told her that it could come at any time. If you

The NEWS
One billion PCs shipped since the Altair
The PC just turned 1 billion.
Approximately 1 billion PCs have been shipped worldwide since the mid-'70s,
according to a study released Sunday by consulting firm Gartner. Seventy-five
percent of these machines have gone into professional, or work-related, environments,
while the other 25 percent have been for personal, or home, use. Approximately
81.5 percent of PCs shipped have been desktops.

Microsoft Now Only Tech Company in Top 10
"This is from the July 3, 2002 issue of the WinInfo Update Daily email
newsletter (by Paul Thurrott):
"A few weeks ago I mentioned that Microsoft is now the world's largest
company (when measured by market value). But with falling tech-stock prices
knocking down IBM and Intel, Microsoft is now the only high-tech company in
the top 10. Here's the list:
1. Microsoft: $285 billion
2. General Electric: $283 billion
3. ExxonMobil: $276 billion
4. Wal-Mart: $242 billion
5. Pfizer: $212 billion
6. Citigroup: $198 billion
7. BP: $191 billion
8. American International Group (AIG): $175 billion
9. Johnson & Johnson: $152 billion
10. Coca-Cola: $140 billion
Incidentally, even the top 10 companies aren't doing great. Microsoft's market
value has fallen 50 percent since last year, and the top 10 companies lost
a combined $310 billion of market value in the first half of 2002. Yikes."
Yahoo relaunches with streamlined look
"Online portal Yahoo introduced a newly redesigned home page Tuesday,
sporting a cleaner layout with more potential real estate for advertisers.
The launch comes a little less than a month after Yahoo first announced the
changes, the first overhaul to the basic framework of the company's home page
since 1995.
The redesigned home page went live late Monday, according to Yahoo spokeswoman
Diana Lee."

Question
I'm running WinME - Internet explorer. For some reason I cannot save downloaded
images in JPG format... My options only show BMP. Can someone tell me how
to change this ? What settings do I need to look at?

A Virtual Globe on Your Desktop

is a small piece of software that shows and updated virtual globe on your
desktop. It can be customized to show particular cities, as well as showing
a shaded view of what part of earth is currently in darkness. Xearth also
shows updated earthquake information.
The Simplest Solution
Subscriber and dearest friend Tracey Norton once came to me asking for some
help with her computer because her keyboard wouldn't work. Apparently Tracey
didn't realize that you need to have your keyboard plugged in to have it work.
She wanted to remind everyone that sometimes the easiest, stupidest solution
is the right one.
Tracey also passed along a funny image that is a cartoon of a mouse using

Previous and Next Buttons in Outlook and Outlook Express
Many people read emails in the "preview" mode of their email program.
If you actually open a message in Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express, you
can use the Previous and Next buttons to read your email in sequence of how
you sort your mail. For those people who do not use the preview pane in these
packages, this could be a real time saver.
Last Week's Windows XP Article
Last week I shared a link to a couple of articles that explained how to upgrade
your PC for $300 so you could run Windows XP. Subscriber David Brumley sent
me the following:
"I checked out the two articles on upgrading an older system to WinXP;
they were interesting, but I noticed that the author left the cost of XP itself
out of the $300 budget."
