Ask Jeeves Bans Banners
"The much-maligned banner ad was further maligned Monday, when search engine Ask Jeeves (Quote, Company Info) announced its Ask.com site would no longer carry banners, instead relying on targeted ads and paid listings.
As of the beginning of the year, the Emeryville, Calif-based company has not accepted banner ad placements, winnowing its advertising units to two: a targeted "branded response" graphic ad tied to user queries and text-based paid-listings generated through its partnership with Google."For more info:

Web's privacy protocol needs big-name boost
"Do you trust the Internet any more today than you did a year ago?
A new study out of the United States claims you do. Well, actually, it claims that Americans do, but since when have Americans made the distinction?
According to the study - a joint effort by the Conference Board, NFO WorldGroup and Forrester Research - about a quarter of Web surfers feel their personal information will be safe with businesses they interact with and buy stuff over the Internet.
That's up 3 percentage points from a year ago. Not a huge jump, mind you, but the Conference Board is quick to point out that it's a meaningful move in the right direction. 'This trust barrier is beginning to erode,' said one spokesperson."
Water way to run a network
Streaming media has taken on a literal meaning, after an artist worked out a way of sending images between computers using water.
Jonah Brucker-Cohen explained that the core technology behind the idea is a new internet protocol he has developed called H2O/IP.
'H20/IP functions in a similar way as TCP/IP but focuses on the inherent viscous properties of water that are not present in traditional packet networks,' he said. For more info:

Lindows CEO funds Xbox hacking contest
"The revelation was made in a posting earlier this week on the Xbox Linux Project site at SourceForge, a site for collaborative development of open-source software projects. Robertson disclosed his identity as the person funding the contest and extended the deadline.
Robertson confirmed the SourceForge posting in an interview Thursday with CNET News.com, saying he funded the contest not for business goals but to promote open access to technology. 'There is no business justification; that's not why I did it,' he said. 'I did it because I thought people should have the choice to run the software they want on the hardware of their choice... I don't think when you buy a car, they should be able to tell you what brand of gas to put in it.'"For more info:

Question
Can anyone suggest why my cursor locks up and I am unable to shut down except by switching off? This usually happens when I have a few programs open and I am connected to the Internet. I don't get any warning. Is this a RAM problem? I can expand the RAM a lot more, but some people have told me I have plenty and this shouldn't be happening.

Outlook 2000 Holidays
Last week I shared a link with a description of how to add Holidays to the Calendar in Microsoft Outlook 2000 for the Calendar years 2003 - 2006. It was an 8-step process. I've since found Microsoft's own instructions. There is one file to download. When you install it, it will add in the new Holidays. Check it out at http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7d4d9017-8d4e-4963-8ba7-d2e91d491f5e&DisplayLang=en I would still recommend that you remember the instructions at http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/37.htm#tipadaweek as it also tells you how to delete holidays.
