THE NEWS
-----------------------------------------------------------
Abortion Doctor killed; Name found on Internet
-----------------------------------------------------------
In Buffalo, a doctor who performed abortions was murdered. It
was discovered that his name was on a web site that targeted abortion
providers.

SEC reprimands major companies
-------------------------------------------
This past week, the Security Exchange Commission (SEC) reprimanded
all of the major companies for failing to disclose each companies
true Year 2000 compliancy situation. The commission said that
each company should be more open about any problems which they
have so traders can make the proper decisions.

What's happening with Microsoft?
----------------------------------------------
Every week, I will provide several links to articles about the
Microsoft case with the DOJ. I will provide no editorial comments,
other than this. I think that Microsoft should give every company
a chance to compete, but I don't think that they should be under
such intense scrutiny as they are right now. People complain about
the Starr report costing so much money. Well, this DOJ case won't
be cheap for either side, and I don't really think that anything
will come from this. A waste of time!

THE TIPS
----------------------------
Try a Meta Search
----------------------------
If you are new to the Internet it is quite likely that you are
using a search engine such as http://www.yahoo.com/
to find things. My father has recently started using my computer
to look up some antiques that he is interested in. I referred
him to Yahoo as well and he had nothing but problems with it.
The results don't make a whole lot of sense and he started yelling
at me (as if I had anything to do with it!). I have spent the
last couple of days looking at various search engines to see which
ones are better. I used to like http://infoseek.go.com/
but they have changed their layout and I find it isn't as easy
to use any more.
You should try and do a meta search. Enter the word you want to search for in MetaCrawler at http://www.metacrawler.com/. It gives you a well organized listing from many of the different search engines. I found that using MetaCrawler gave me much more accurate results from my searches and I will certainly recommend it to my father and other beginners like him.
Find the Systems Applet of the Control Panel faster
-----------------------------------------------------------------
If someone is trying to give you technical advice and they tell
you to open the Systems applet, they will probably tell you in
the following manner Start Menu--Settings--Control Panel--System.
That will certainly work, but it takes a little too long for me,
and also opens up the Control Panel on your desktop, which isn't
needed when you only want the System Applet.
There is a short cut to this. If you have a Windows 95 Keyboard, then you have 3 new keys, 2 Windows keys, and one menu key. Well, to access the systems applet, press and hold down one of the Windows keys (looks like the little Microsoft Window) and press the Pause / Break key (usually found to the right of all of the Function keys). Go ahead, try it right now! The systems applet appears right away.
Well, that's all for this week. Remember that if there is anything that you want to learn about, let me know and I will try to accommodate you.
